Costambar Beach is one of those special beaches of Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic around which a community of expats have built a successful retirement community, its beautiful tropical beach enjoyed by many every day of the week.

It is located West of Puerto Plata, just before reaching Cofresi and past San Felipe, the main district. It is inside a gated community with public access and very good security both by the local homeowners association and also by the Dominican Tourist Police (Politur).

Costambar Beach

The Beach has an extension of about 2 kilometers, from Punta Cafemba to El Farolito, where it borders with Cofresi. The beach has plenty of coral and tropical fish, giving it an interesting natural pool aspect as it is shalllow in many areas, promoting snorkeling and family beach trips.

The first 600 meters from Cafemba point look very pristine, as there are no sellers or restaurants, great for a romantic walk for couples. The center of the beach has several lounger rentals and it is where the line up of restaurants begin, also the Amber Beach Club (reserved for Amber Cove cruise ship passengers). This area is great for scenic photography.

The Beach Restaurants

A bit further we find Pascual Fast Food, a classic of Costambar for over 2 decades, great for drinks, seafood and American fast food. Further to its left the visitors find Atalaya del Chef, another great beachfront restaurant in a beautiful spot of the beach. Almost next to it there`s Estrella Del Mar, another gem of Costambar gastronomy by the water.

The views from here are spectacular and the staff very dedicated. This is a busy hangout for foreign retirees. Further down the beach there`s El Carey, the largest of all the restaurants as it has a dance area with bar, run by a Dominican-Dutch couple. Their beachfront has sunbrellas made of thatched roofing, a great bartender and a very nice host (Kelvin).

The Next one down is El Catamaran, a landmark with many stories from the past days of Costambar. They also have loungers, a bar and food services. Last but not least is El Farolito, great for local food, drinks and good music. Outside of the beach we find Solemio Pizzeria Restaurant, at the corners of Higuahota and Anacaona streets.

Marine life

Costambar Beach has created a marine park boundary to allow snorkelers and divers enjoy a great marine life experience. Many Caribbean species can be seen around the reef, such as Surgeon fish, Snapper, Parrot Fish, Lion Fish, French Grunt, and pelagic species farther off the coast. The Costambar Coral Reef group was created to share awareness and resources on the effort. This list of Dominican marine species is an important reference.

Costambar Villa Rentals

The community that once was just a few homes now has over 1000 homes built as condos and villas. Los Mangos Golf Course became a real estate development for those who want to retire and live around the beautiful golfing grounds. Around 60% of Costambar land is developed, the rest are still empty lots that can double its residential capacity. For villa rentals in Costambar just go online to find all the current deals.

Costambar Tours

The list of tours in Costambar begin with the beautiful beach and its people, where any given day can turn into a dance party of locals and foreigners. Second to it we`d say the Los Mangos Golf course is a must for golfing enthusiasts.

Other tours such as horseback riding, Off road ATVs, sports fishing, Ocean World marine park and eco friendly adventures are found next door in Cofresi and Puerto Plata. A trip to Sosua and Cabarete further expands the tours list, and includes the superb Sosua Bay Catamaran and Sosua Quads Rental tours, two great activities to enjoy in the outdoors.
